Forget Your iPhone’s Phone App, Use Viber – Free Calls over WiFi, 3G
If the recipient / caller is not a Viber user, the call is transferred over to the iOS Phone app. Viber always has to listen for incoming calls. It does this through push notifications. If your phone is ON then so is Viber.

Just tap on the preference that you want to modify and it will be turned off at first. Tap on it again and you get the option to change the interval before the wireless connection is being turned off. The application runs silently in the background after you have installed it. You will notice that WiFi will be activated when you unlock the device, and that it will be turned off again when those criteria are met. Note that you may not want to turn off WiFi automatically if you are using apps that require it to run. If you need new email notifications for example, you may want to keep it turned on as you won’t get any if WiFi is the only source of Internet access.

The app uses smartphones’ Internet connections to make the call, either through a Wi-Fi network or over 3G or 4G networks. Now, three months after introducing the feature for iPhone users, Facebook started rolling it out to some U.S. Android users Thursday afternoon and says more users will get the feature throughout Friday. They don’t need to update the Messenger app to use the free voice calling feature. Once users get the feature, they can access it by tapping the circled “i” icon from within a conversation.
